How to Ask for Honest Google Reviews
Make it easy for customers to leave honest feedback without pressuring them to be positive. Where your professional rules permit review requests, use a neutral process that does not select only satisfied customers.
Choose a consistent point in the customer journey, such as completion of a service, rather than using a positive satisfaction score to decide who receives a public review link. For regulated professions, confirm whether requesting reviews is permitted before adding it to your workflow.
A Simple Request
Illustrative template:
"Thank you for working with us. If you wish, you can leave an honest review of your experience here: [direct Google review link]. Feedback is optional and helps people understand our service."
Keep the request separate from a promised outcome. Do not claim a tax saving, treatment benefit, or business result the customer has not documented. Publish only documented results in any marketing copy you adapt from customer work, with permission where required.
Do not offer incentives, request a particular star rating, or discourage negative feedback. Google's review guidance calls for genuine experiences and prohibits incentives in exchange for reviews or changes to reviews.
Get the Link from Google
Use the review-link or QR-code option in your Google Business Profile. Copy the link into the request or use the QR code where appropriate. You do not need a third-party review service to obtain it. Follow Google's review-link instructions.
Check that the destination is your business. Explain the request clearly and leave the customer free to decide whether to respond. Do not promise that leaving a review takes a particular amount of time.
Respond Helpfully
For positive feedback, a brief acknowledgement is sufficient. For criticism, address what you can appropriately discuss and offer a private contact route for anything sensitive. Adapt a response to the feedback rather than posting the same message repeatedly.
Illustrative response: "Thank you for taking the time to share feedback. Please contact us through [business contact route] if you would like us to follow up privately."
Do not reveal private details or confirm a sensitive professional relationship in a public reply. Responding can show readers that you pay attention to feedback; do not claim that response rate is a proven ranking signal.
Track Your Own Baseline
Record the review requests sent, completed reviews you can observe, and the period covered. Response rates vary. Do not expect a fixed proportion of requests to become reviews or promise a total after a year.
If requests are being missed, check the link and wording. Keep any follow-up proportionate and optional. Compare review activity with actual inquiries without assuming one caused the other.
