How to Review Your Business in Google AI Overviews
AI Overviews may appear for some Google queries. A response can include supporting links, but its appearance and the sources shown can vary. Record what you observe rather than treating one search as a permanent view of your visibility.
Google's guidance for AI features says that established SEO practices remain relevant. A page must be indexed and eligible for a search snippet to qualify as a supporting link. Meeting the requirements does not guarantee inclusion.
Record a Useful Baseline
Choose questions relevant to the services you actually provide. Include location when it matters and vary the question to reflect different customer needs.
For each check, record:
- The exact query and date.
- Whether an AI Overview appeared.
- Whether your business was named, linked, or described accurately.
- The supporting sources and what those pages actually say.
If no AI Overview appears, record that too. Do not interpret it as a failure of your business profile. Repeat relevant checks across dates before drawing broader conclusions.
Review Your Website
Make the service, audience, contact details, and genuine location understandable in readable text. Give important pages clear links from relevant parts of the site. Investigate access or indexing problems using your website's actual configuration and search data.
Where structured data is used, keep it consistent with the visible page. Google does not require a special AI schema or AI text file for these features. See its AI feature guidance.
Use service-specific pages when they help answer different customer questions. Explain the work included and the next step, rather than producing near-identical pages for places where you have no genuine presence.
Keep Public Business Information Accurate
Review an eligible Google Business Profile, relevant professional directories, and your own contact information. Describe qualifications in appropriate available fields and on your website; do not assume a universal credentials field exists.
A Google Business description must be no more than 750 characters, including spaces, with no URLs. Service areas are for businesses visiting or delivering to customers in person, not a way for online-only businesses to become eligible. Follow Google's representation guidelines.
Where professional rules permit, encourage genuine reviews through a neutral process. No review count or recency threshold guarantees AI citations. Profile updates can inform customers; do not present their frequency as a proven AI selection factor.
Separate Findings from Explanations
Hypothetical example: a business appears in ordinary search results but is absent from an AI Overview for a related query. That observation alone does not establish whether reviews, profile completeness, or another factor explains the difference.
You can identify an outdated cited page or a missing service explanation and recommend correcting it. You cannot reliably infer the model's exact selection reasons from the answer.
