A Google Business Profile Guide for Professional Services
A Google Business Profile can provide useful public information about an eligible professional service business. Start with eligibility and accurate details, then maintain the features actually available for your category and region.
"Complete" does not mean filling every possible field. It means supplying appropriate, accurate information without inventing qualifications, locations, or activity.
Check Eligibility and Location
An office address must meet Google's requirements for a real customer-facing location. Do not assume that a mailing address or virtual office qualifies.
Use service areas when you visit or deliver to customers in person. An online-only business is not eligible simply by listing service areas. If customers are not served at your business address, follow Google's requirements for hiding it. Listing an area does not guarantee rankings there. Review Google's representation guidelines, including the rules for individual practitioners where applicable.
Illustrative example: a consultant who visits customers in nearby towns may describe the genuine area served, subject to eligibility rules. A consultant who meets everyone online does not become eligible by adding those towns.
Choose Accurate Categories
Select the most accurate available primary category for your main business. Add secondary categories only when they describe work you actually provide. Availability varies, so check the choices shown in your profile rather than assuming a category name exists everywhere.
A category does not determine ordering by itself. Google's local ranking guidance describes relevance, distance, and prominence as factors.
Write a Useful Description
Explain the service, audience, genuine location, and a relevant detail about your approach. Keep the description within 750 characters, including spaces, and check the count before saving. Do not include URLs; use the website field.
Avoid unsupported superlatives, invented experience, or promised results. The description guide includes a fictional example you can adapt using your actual details.
Use Accurate Photos and Qualifications
Choose clear, current images of your business, team, appropriate workspace, or permitted work samples. Obtain permission for identifiable people or client work and avoid exposing confidential material. There is no photo count that guarantees a ranking improvement.
Describe accurate qualifications in appropriate available fields and on your website. Use applicable verification features offered for your category. A universal credentials field is not something every profile provides. Publish only documented credentials and results.
Share Useful Updates
Use posts to inform people viewing the profile about services, genuine availability changes, or relevant educational material. Do not assume that a posting schedule improves rankings.
If posting every two weeks fits your workload, rotate these four ideas across eight weeks:
- Week 1: An answer to a practical service question.
- Week 3: An accurate service or availability update.
- Week 5: A useful checklist or explanation of your process.
- Week 7: A relevant seasonal reminder, checked for accuracy.
This is a suggested editorial schedule, not a requirement for visibility. Update critical information, such as changed hours, when it changes rather than waiting for a scheduled post.
Handle Reviews and Questions
Where professional rules permit, invite honest feedback through a neutral process that does not select only satisfied customers. Use the native Google review link or QR-code option. Do not offer incentives or promise a particular response rate.
Respond helpfully without revealing confidential information or confirming sensitive professional relationships. Public replies inform prospective customers; do not treat response rate as a proven ranking signal.
If a questions feature is available, check it for unanswered or inaccurate information. Otherwise, put common questions and answers on your website. Useful topics include consultation arrangements, actual fees or pricing process, services offered, and verified qualifications.
A Maintenance Checklist
- Accurate business name, appropriate category, and genuine location information.
- Description within 750 characters, with no URLs.
- Correct phone, website destination, and applicable hours.
- Current images and verified qualifications where appropriate.
- Useful updates, neutral review requests, and careful responses.
Review these after changes to the business. Track profile interactions and relevant inquiries without assuming that completing the checklist means you will outrank another business.
