How to Check Local Business Recommendations in Perplexity
When testing a local business question in Perplexity, examine the answer and any cited sources together. A citation gives you a page to inspect. It does not reveal a complete list of ranking factors or prove that every statement in the answer is accurate.
Run a Useful Test
Choose questions that reflect an actual buying need. An illustrative example is "Which accountants offer bookkeeping for independent retailers in [city]?" Try a broad service query and a more specific question about a service you provide.
Save the exact wording, date, settings where available, response, and source links. Check whether your business appears, whether the service and location are correct, and whether the cited pages support those details.
Repeat relevant queries on different dates. Absence from one response does not establish that the tool cannot find you anywhere.
Public Sources Worth Reviewing
Relevant directories and publications can provide public information about your business. Their inclusion in any particular response is not guaranteed.
Professional directories. Check your listing in an association or licensing directory if you are entitled to one. Correct the service, location, membership, and contact details. Do not assume membership determines ordering in AI responses.
Your own website. State what you do, who you serve, and how to contact you. Keep service information available as readable text and correct outdated pages.
Social profiles. Make your description accurate and useful to visitors. Do not assume that every profile or post is publicly accessible or indexed by Perplexity.
Publications and guides. Publish material that answers real customer questions. A relevant article may offer useful context, but press coverage does not guarantee discovery or citation.
Local directories. Consider a relevant BBB listing in the US or Canada, or an appropriate local directory elsewhere. BBB describes its coverage as the United States and Canada. Check eligibility and usefulness before paying for any listing.
Use Comparisons Carefully
Hypothetical example: a consultant appears in Google search but is absent from one Perplexity response. Inspect the sources and test other questions before drawing conclusions. Neither a sparse social profile nor missing press coverage proves why the consultant was omitted.
Keep separate notes for observations and proposed fixes. "The cited directory has our old address" is an observation you can act on. "This directory caused the result" requires evidence that the response alone cannot provide.
What Our Products Cover
The Full Report checks ChatGPT, Gemini, Claude, Grok, and Google AI for relevant queries; Perplexity is not one of those five tools. For $39 one-time, the human-reviewed report is delivered within 24 hours and covers your website, Google Business Profile, social profiles, those five AI tools, two competitor comparisons, website headline and Google description rewrites, prioritised fixes, and a 90-day action plan.
The free AI Visibility Score runs over 100 automated checks of website access, readable content, and business details. Results appear on the page, usually under a minute, and the score and top fixes are emailed to you. It does not score Google Business Profile, social accounts, or content.
